Dear reader, yet again we intend to enable you meet most of our stakeholders in the Teaching Assistantships Project. And so, here we go:

Today, we wold like you to meet Ngabonziza Pierre Celestin. He has been a teacher for the past twenty years!, Imagine how many students have gone through his hands! That is how powerful teaching is- teachers influence many lives.

Pierre Celestin is currently the Director of studies at Nyamata Catholic School located in Nyamata, Bugesera district in the Eastern province of Rwanda. Nyamata Catholic School is one of the seventy-three schools where the Teaching Assistantships Project is being piloted. The Teaching Assistantships Project is a Mastercard Foundation funded project being implemented by Inspire, Educate and Empower Rwanda (IEE). The project aims at engaging bright young girls who are in their transitional year to tertiary education, and who have an interest in education, to take up positions as Teaching Assistants, supporting teaching of Mathematics and Science. Mastercard Foundation and IEE aim to inspire young talented girls to take up teaching careers, to contribute to Rwanda’s priorities for qualified teachers, particularly in the sciences.

Pierre Celestin, who has been championing an initiative where students from his school get encouraged and supported to take up community volunteering, is excited about the approach of the Teaching Assistantships Project.

This is a very interesting project since it is going to open the doors for both the Teaching Assistants and the host schools to change young people’s attitudes towards teaching and to interest them to join the teaching profession. Students are going to benefit from inspiration by Teaching Assistants, and teachers are also going to enjoy working with young, aspiring teachers. We shall do our best to ensure the Teaching Assistants are given opportunities to gain practical experience in teaching- saysPierre Celestin.

Pierre Celestin is excited that his school is one of the pilot schools for the Teaching Assistantships Project. He promises to support our two Teaching Assistants; Kaberinka Jeannette and Muhorakeye Fionah, who will spend six months at the school before they leave for tertiary education.
