IN-SERVICE TEACHER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH SCHOOL-BASED MENTORSHIP: EDUCATION IN EMERGENCIES

PROJECT TIMELINE

2013 – 2015

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

During this time, in 48 schools, including Kigeme and Mugombwa camps hosting Congolese refugees, IEE implemented programmes to support school-based mentorship activities involving supporting teachers with preparation for effective teaching and learning, creation of materials to support teaching and learning as well as using appropriate positive discipline approaches to manage large classes.  This was the time when IEE with the support of UNICEF was still modelling in-service teacher development through School-based Mentorship. IEE Trainers supported teachers to have increased capacity to deliver quality education, by improving their pedagogical approaches and English language, in an overall effort to improve learning environments and delivery of quality teaching.

IEE supported distribution of Early Childhood Development (ECD) kits/ materials, to all pre-primary schools country-wide and trained all pre-primary teachers on play-based methodologies to support children’s learning.

IEE also implemented a national school sanitation and hygiene campaign with distribution of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) materials to all public and government-aided schools and facilitated trainings for sector and district education officials to support schools to enhance sanitation and hygiene.
